I am currently a 38 year old female.  I have been overweight since about the 3rd grade.  My weight has gone up and down over the years, many times.  I have lost 20-30 lbs. several times with the help of WW or Phen-phen and gained it back, and then some.  I am type II diabetic, with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  No matter what I do or don't eat, I can't seem to control my diabetes with diet, or with medicine.  My weight is now about 240, from a high of 270.  That leaves my BMI right around 38. Many, or most, people don't believe I need WLS, that I am not too big, or (according to some wls-ers, not big enough) but according to doctors and insurance, a BMI of 38 and co-morbidities is all I need.  I wish it were as simple as eating the right foods, or exercising, but let's face it, we all know it's not.    I'm very fortunate that my DH and family are supportive. They just want me healthy.  My primary doctor has never really discussed my weight with me... he'd rather treat things when they break than prevent them from happening to begin with.  The only truly wise words I've heard from him about being diabetic and controlling my blood sugar is : once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed.
