Next Step, PLASTICS!

Aug 11, 2015

Hi everyone! It has been a long time and I thought it was time to update!

I am now almost 28 months post from gastric bypass surgery. I started out at 377.5 lbs and a BMI in the high 60’s. I think about 66-ish. I am now about 165 lbs and holding steady for quite some time. My BMI is now hovering about 28. Still overweight but I have a lot of extra skin. It is mostly on my tummy, so on the to the next step! Back in April I started at the plastic surgery consult. Got my insurance approval and now I am scheduled on August 26th for a fluer-de-lis tummy tuck/panni which is coming up soon! I am pretty excited but also very nervous! I will be sure to update with pictures after!

Liquid Diet

Apr 13, 2013

Here I am on day 4 of the liquid diet.  Still waiting for it to get easier.  I have been told it should after day 3 but maybe my luck will change soon.  I really shouldn't complain because I know some people have it way worse.  I should be thrilled that I get a couple of healthy foods a day with my three shakes.  Each day I get each of these once a day:

Pack of plain instant oatmeal.

One cup of lettuce, carrots, cucumber, or celery.

Half cup of unsweetened applesauce.

One Danon Light and Fit Greek yogurt.

One cup of Progresso Light soup.

One sugar free pudding.

One sugar free jello or Popsicle.

And it's nice to see the scale move each day.  I am now losing about 1.5 lbs each day.  Nine days and twenty-two hours til surgery.  I CAN do this!!!!!

Surgery coming up!!

Apr 08, 2013

It's getting closer!!  My surgery date was changed to April 24th since my surgeon wanted to make sure I was his first of the day surgery.   Only two days later which is ok with me.  Tuesday (tomorrow) is my last day of food since I am starting the liquid diet on Wednesday.  I am starting to become more nervous as each day passes.  No thoughts of backing out, just nervous about the "what if's".  I had a dream last night where I woke up from surgery and had like 50 staples and my doctor wouldn't prescribe pain meds lol.  Then a few nights before that I had a dream I couldn't even swallow water.  I am definitely excited to finally be getting so close and to be within weeks of surgery.  But it's still so much to take in!!

In the next few days I plan on shopping for all things needed for surgery.  I figure that should take my mind off the nervousness for at least a day or so!

Surgery is FINALLY scheduled!!!

Mar 06, 2013

It's been awhile since I updated.  So the first thing is to catch everyone up.  In October I was just about ready for surgery when my husbands awesome insurance was lost.  He was laid off and insurance cancelled.  Thankfully my insurance still covered the surgery - it was just going to take a little longer.  My insurance required the dreaded six month diet and I felt like it would never end!!!  But yesterday was my last appointment and I couldn't be happier.  My surgery has been scheduled for April 22, 2013!!!   Less than seven weeks away!  On March 25th I have my pre-op class and I sign consents the next day.   I have to have a pre-op check up by my pcp early April.  And that's really it!!!

Back in December I was diagnosed with a DVT, or a blood clot in my right leg under my knee.   So I had to go on blood thinners for three months.  My last dose was yesterday thank goodness.   But since I am not at even a higher risk for future blood clots I will need to see a vascular surgeon about having a IVC filter placed in my jugular artery through my neck. (Yikes!!!)  My consult with him is on March 13th and I should be scheduled to have the filter placed the week after.   I am pretty nervous about that!!

I will be updating a little more often now that things are happening!!

Getting Closer.... And big decisions!!

Oct 10, 2012

So I met with my surgeon yesterday and had my pyche eval.  The only two things I was missing was that my new insurance requires 5 years of weight history compared to the last insurance who only required 3.  But I had all of that taken care of today and the bariatric office received it.  Now they are waiting for the letter from the pysch eval and then the office is submitting for approval!  Its so exciting!!

The only thing is that since my husband was laid off our insurance is going to end and now we are going to do the COBRA thing in order to keep the insurance until the surgery is done.  That kind of sucks but we will do what we got to do.  But the insurance company needs to have the precert before my coverage terms that way once it restarts I will already have my approval and be ready for surgery.  And that just might save us a month of premiums!  But it all has to fall into place perfectly for that to happen.  Sooo fingers crossed!  If all goes well then my surgeon says we will be scheduling the surgery for November.

And my surgeon also said that doing the RNY may be impossible to do laprascopically.  When I had my vertical c-section with my son the incision had opened and had a horrible time healing.  I was left with a lot of scar tissue because of that.  He thinks he should be able to do it but he said there could be problems with my bowels being stuck to the scar tissue.  And since I dont want to be opened up I have agreed to have the sleeve done if the RNY isnt going to work.   My doctor does want me to consider just going with the sleeve but he said its completely up to me either way.  I think I will go for the RNY if possible though since I feel its better for me, especially with such a high BMI.

Hopefully I will able to post soon about my approval.  I meet with my surgeon again on November 6th and we are hoping to schedule surgery that day!!!

What will I look like?

Sep 27, 2012

I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos lately from people that have lost a lot of weight through gastric bypass.  The ones showing skin are the ones that most intrigue me.  Borderline obsessive really!  But I have thought a lot about what I will look like once I lose the weight.  I have always been big and have never seen the adult skinny version of myself.  When I first started on this path of weight loss I didn't even think about looks.  Just getting healthier and fitting in seats better.  But now that this is an actual reality, I wonder about looks...  I know in clothes I will look pretty darn good - but what about under the clothes?  I know its going to be bad!!  I weigh 370 lbs and my goal with my surgeon (for now) is 200 lbs.  But my ideal weight for my height is 143 max!  I know that the extra skin will add up too so maybe 170-ish.  I just cant wrap my head around that.

I go back to the surgeons office on October 9th and I think they will be happy.  I have completed everything I needed to do - almost!  I have completed the pulmonary function test, sleep study, got my pulmonary and cardiac clearance, went to a support group, PCP has written my letter of recommendation, and of course blood work.  The only two very small things left is to see my other PCP from 2010 to get my weight history.  And my psyche eval is also on October 9th.  The psyche doctor works with my surgeon in the same office so I will officially have every little thing done by the time I see the surgeon!

My hubby's much better insurance also kicks in October 1st so I am hoping that the surgeons office can send off for approval once I see him!!!  How exciting is that?!?!  The new insurance company says that decisions are made very quickly too.  And then we just schedule...  I cannot wait!!

One step at a time!

Sep 17, 2012

I will be having gastric bypass sometime before the end of the year!  I met with Dr. Dahman on September 4th, 2012 and he feels I would be an excellent candidate for weight loss surgery.   Right now my insurance company requires a 6 month supervised diet with the surgeon plus a cardiac and pulmonary clearance.  Luckily for me, my husband will have new insurance starting on October 1st that is really good.  His insurance does not require a wait or supervised diet.  I have decided to get all of my clearances though just incase!  I have all of my preliminary stuff either completed or scheduled and I will have everything done by the time I go back to Dr. Dahman's office on October 9th!

Its all becoming very real to me that this is going to happen.  For so long I wished my insurance would cover it and now I will finally have my chance!
