New (to me) clothes

Oct 20, 2011

I just got back from visiting my sister in another state.  She has always been smaller than me (still is).  She has been losing weight too and gave me a bunch of clothes.  She had one suit (jacket and pants), one other blazer,  lots of dress pants and jeans.  She had some shorts but since they were my current size and I live in Ohio,  I did not think I could use them and left them there.  We went to Target and I bought a suit case set on rollers with a pull handle,  packed up the clothes and took them home.  What a great sister I have!

I can eat chicken!!

Oct 20, 2011

I went to visit my sister in another state.  I flew down and back with my mom.  We had a lay over each way to be able to fly into a smaller airport close to my sister.  The In'tl airport closest to her is over 3 hours away one way.  We had a good time just hanging out together, playing cards and talking (listening).  Anyway....

I have really had a problem with  chicken.  It sits so heavy in my pouch.  Most times it comes back up.  So I quit eating it for a long time.  The last night at my sister's house she made chicken breasts.  She put  a mixture of lf mayo, grated parmasean cheese and a little bit of bread crumbs on top and baked them.  I decided to give them a try and see how it went.  They were very moist, I am assuming from the mayo and very tasty.  I am hoping that either this recipe works or I am far enough along to be able to tolerate chicken again.   I think my kids will really like this recipe as well.  I am thinking of trying it tonight.

Sleep Apnea follow-up

Sep 29, 2011

Today I wen to see my doctor that tests for sleep apnea.  He asked how my C-pap machine was doing.  I said I wasn't using it.  If I did start out with it on it came off after I fell asleep.  It just wasn't comfortable.  I told him my kids said I did not snore anymore and I wasn't waking up because I stopped breathing like I did before I started using the machine.

He said that the only way to prove I did not have sleep apnea was to have another sleep study but did not want to do another one until I was closer to or at goal.  So he wants another one in 6 months then I will see him again, hopefully for the last time.

He said that I did not have to use the machine anymore unless I felt some of the symptons return/

3 Months

Sep 19, 2011

Although I am a little over 1 week past 3 months,  I had my 3 month appointment yesterday.

I met with the nurse practitioner.  All seems well.  I am down 74 lbs (including 30 from 6 weeks of Optifast).  I am really hoping to get to 100 lbs. by my 6 month appointment.  It will be hard and will have to make sure I keep my activity up.
I was told I am now allowed to eat raw fruits and veggies if I had not started.  I have eaten a few raw fruits and veggies but not many,  I have had raw apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, melon, green peppers.  I really need to work more fruits and veggies in my diet.  Before surgery I ate them all the time.  Now,  there is just no room.

Other changes since surgery:

My trigger food (peanut butter) really is not that appealing any more.  I hope it stays that way.
I have no interest in soda.  I fear it will irritate my pouch.
I am learning quickly to stop when full.  Not one more bite.  It just isn't worth the stuffed feeling if I don't.
I have gone down 2 - 3 pants sizes depending on the brand.
I am much more interested in how I look and even dress to show off the weight loss.

Bod Pod

Sep 19, 2011

Well,  My BMI is now 39.9 which means I am obese.  Not extreme morbidly obese,  not morbidly obese,  just obese.
I started this process with a BMI of 50.  This is very exciting.

Last week I went to the local university that has a bod pod.  For $25 they measure your lean body weight and your fat body weight.  The guy gave me some pointers on excercise, diet,  # of calories, etc. but the information is really geared towards a person with a normal stomach.  But anyway knowing my lean body weight helped me to realize where my goal weight should be when I get to the 22% - 30% body fat % that is normal for women.

I think I will go back in a few months and see if my lean body weight has increased.  That will tell me how my exercise and resistance training are going.

Walking speed

Sep 04, 2011

I have always been a slow walker.  I have had trouble keeping up.  Always!
Yesterday I went with hubby and kids (teens) to the county fair. When we were leaving and walking to the car I realized how slow all the people were walking in front of me. I went around them.  When my daughter caught up to me I made the comment about all the slow people.  She said that I walked fast now.  I corrected her that I walk faster now.  Faster than I used to but not necessarily fast.  She said,  no I walked fast now because I could keep up with my husband.  I guess this is a good NSV.

College Orientation

Aug 27, 2011

Today hubby and I took our oldest to college orientation.  Parents sat in an auditorium and students went to varied sessions on getting involved, organization, financial aid, etc.  Afterwards there was a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs or veggie burgers and chips.  I had a veggie burger that was dry and cold.  I added lots of ketchup, some mustard and a piece if cheese that had no chance of melting.

We were sharing a big square table outside that sat eight with a mom and 2 students.  They left and another mom and her son came up and asked if they could sit with us.  She looked familiar and I asked her if she worked at the hospital I worked at.  She said yes.  I told her my name and said I worked in Finance.  She said she worked in the Bariatric Center. Duh!  She is the nurse practicioner that I saw at the beginning, 1 week and 1 month.  She never indicated that she knew who I was or that I should know her.  I said, Oh,  you are Noel!  She said yes.  I then turned to my hubby and daughter and said she is the nurse that I see when I go to the surgeon's office.

I guess it was a good thing that I had a veggie burger without the top half of the bun or no chips.  And my water bottle was still full.  In fact I gave it to my hubby when his pop can was empty.  I told my daughter that if I had been drinking water she would have told on me when I went in for my 3 week appt. in a couple of weeks.

Clothes shopping

Aug 19, 2011

Last weekend I did a lot of school shopping for my kids.  Son is 16 and daughter is 18.  My son needed jeans and long shorts.  My daughter needed everything.  I spent WAY too much money.  But since my daughter is a size 18 and I figure I will be there soon,  she is reaping the benefits of my shopping.  She saw a thin black sweater that is worn like a jacket.  It was too expensive and I would not buy it.

When we got home and I was organizing the smaller clothes I bought on sale as I saw them for when i was smaller.  I found a black sweater almost exactly like the one she wanted.  I took it to her and said I bought it for myself for when I get to a size 18 but she could wear it until then.  She just rolled her eyes at me.  I asked her what that meant.  Didn't she think I would ever get to a size 18?  I have always been a size 24 or higher since my kids have been born.  She said, "No,  that's not it.  You will probably be a size 18 by next week!"  I assured her that it won't be that fast.  I am currently wearing 22/24 on bottom and a 2X on top.

Dropped another size

Aug 19, 2011

I started out in size 26 pants and size 3X tops.  After my 6-week liquid diet (Optifast) and losing 30 lbs. I was able to wear 2X tops and get into my size 24 pants again without feeling like a sausage.  Today I am wearing size 22 pants.  I have a few other size 22s as well.  I don't remember how long it has been since I have been in a size 22.  Probably during my first or second year of marriage  (1981 or 1982).  So, needless to say,  I am thrilled!

NSV - I have a waist

Aug 14, 2011

Saturday I was getting ready to go to our annual church picnic.  I had pulled out of the closet some jean capri pants that I have not worn for at least 2 or 3 summers.  I also had a golf shirt that I bought recently on sale that is a size smaller then what I used to wear.  As I stood at the bathroom sink brushing my teeth I looked in the mirror and realized I have a waist!
How cool is that?!?!?

Today I put on my favorite blouse I bought last time I had lost weight (2005).  I have worn it once before since surgery a couple of weeks ago.  I put it on and looking in the mirror I noticed that it is almost too big on me.  Hmm.... I really do like this blouse.  I guess I will wear it one last time before putting it into the "too big" bag.
