Confused........

So I'm having my sleeve surgery tomorrow.  I've been reading over the material from the clinic and it says my post-op diet is (this is after 2 weeks of liquid and 4 weeks of mush) 1100 to 1200 calories, to get at least 60 grams of protein, to eat breakfast--snack--lunch--snack--supper--snack. This seems like a lot of calories and a lot of eating compared to other posts I've seen.  Does this seem like a lot of calories. I thought 600 was the norm.

Thank-you,

Brenda

I would certainly ask my doctotr to clarify. I am 5 days post op and cannot imagine anything but liquid at this point.  Your tummy will need time to heal.

I would clarify as well. Although every doctor is differant. I was on clear liquids for 4-7 days, then full liguids and then progressed to pureed food. This all lasted about 6 weeks and then I was on soft foods. That is what I am on now as well.

I eat 800 cals daily and stay under 40 carbs.

Itseems like a lot of calories for only 60g of protein.  I would clarify with your NUT to be sure.

My plan does not include food as snacks (only skim milk or protein drinks as snacks).

All the plans are different.  You should follow yours and/or do your research if you choose not to follow that plan.  Be sure you understand what your minimum nutritional needs are.

We don't know your medical history/concerns, so it is hard to really know the what/why behind the plan your medical team gave you.

Some people who are hard core do a super low carb, high protein, 600 calorie diet - others take a more moderate approach and loose weight well also.  You and your medical team have to decide what is right for your body and your needs.

It might be that this is a long term goal for once you reach maintenance, not the goal for weight loss.  Best to ask for clarification.

I Will definitely clarify with NUT.  I'm looking at their plan right now. At the top it reads: 10 tools to maximize weight loss and stay healthy.

1. Daily goals 1100-1200, at least 60 grams protein, and 40 grams fat.

     a. goal=10 grams protein at each meal and snack to = 60 grams. (3 meals and 3 snacks).

2.  Stop drinking 15 minutes before meal and 45 minutes after your meals.

3-10 ect. ect.

I guess slow and steady weight loss will be my mantra.  Not fast and rockin......

Yeah.. my plan for this phase of post-op says meals should be 4-8 ounces and there's no way I could eat that much.  I feel happy if I can eat 3 ounces, most of the time I manage 2.  :P

Wow 4 to 8 ounces at one time does seem like a lot:)  I'll strive for their list of 10 tools to maximize weight loss, but won't stress it if it's not possible. I bet if I routinely make that calorie count I will have minimal hair loss. That's a positive.

Thank -you to all of the above who have responded.

60 gms protein = 240 calories

40 gms fat = 360 calories

That's 600 calories.  If that is the goal, let us know where they're expecting the other 500 calories to come from to reach 1100.  Surely they don't want you to take in 125 gms of carbs.

It is a lot for a newly sleeved person.  You will find that I am a strong voice for "moderation", I had higher than normal calories during the weight loss phase, and I do carbs.  My plan from the NUT did say 1200 calories.... but that was after several months.  Check again and see if they differentiate between the first few weeks out versous 4 months out.  The first couple weeks I was at 400-600.  I was at 800 by the end of month two.  End of month three 900-1000.  By the end of month 5 1200 calories.  With all of that I also exercised 1 hour+ daily, 6 days a week.  It is entirely possible to hit your protein targets on 600 or less calories a day.
