why is an carbonated drink disallowed after surgery?
There is not any serious medical reason for recommending against it, but the carbonation causes painful gas for some people. It will not damage your pouch in any way, however. Some people mistakenly believe it will stretch the pouch, but that is not true at all.
Now, there are many reasons soda is not very healthy for you. But I personally do not see a problem with it in moderation.

I just didn't think of the fizz.... but my pouch sure did.

If you pour a carbonated beverage into a balloon, it'll overflow, because the expanding gas bubbles will make it back up.... but if you cut a second hole in the balloon, then it won't back up, it'll just pour through the hole and never stretch the balloon.
Our pouch is like a balloon with two openings (in and out) and so unless one stops up BOTH holes, there can be no stretching.
But it can hurt like the dickens!
