why is an carbonated drink disallowed after surgery?
Booked to see surgeon next week but would like an answer before.
What did your surgeon say was the medical reason for this?
I guess I can let it go flat before drinking, there are times when eg diet ginger ale is the best thing for nausea.
Thanks

It's not exactly "disallowed."  Some surgeons recommend against it, but they cannot "allow" or "disallow" something.  We are all adults and can make our own choices.

There is not any serious medical reason for recommending against it, but the carbonation causes painful gas for some people.  It will not damage your pouch in any way, however.  Some people mistakenly believe it will stretch the pouch, but that is not true at all.

Now, there are many reasons soda is not very healthy for you.  But I personally do not see a problem with it in moderation.

I bought a "light" fizzy drink the other day and sipped it without really "thinking" and boy, I was hurting for about forty minutes afterwards.

I just didn't think of the fizz.... but my pouch sure did.

I am one of those who experienced a lot of pain from drinking carbonated beverages.  I am over three years out and it has only been in the last month or so that I can tolerate carbonated drinks if they are poured over ice and allowed to go a little flat.

My gastro doc actually advised me to drink 4 oz of soda when ever I got something stuck in my stomach.

Hurts like he[[ and causes great projectile vomiting.

Theres plenty of things to drink besides soda  while you heal. Dont let that stop you.

I drink a couple mini bottles of Diet Pepsi a week. I do not have discomfort from the carbonation I do, however, recommend not drinking too quickly or else you foam at the mouth.

there are some touted "it will stretch your pouch" comments but I've yet to see anything that proves it - so if your surgeon says it's something off limits, ask him/her why? More realistically, it causes some people gas or discomfort. For me, I started caffiene-free diet cokes at around 3 months and drank them kinda flat - then drank normally because I found I can tolerate carbonation very well.

The physics of this show that it is impossible to "stretch the pouch"

If you pour a carbonated beverage into a balloon, it'll overflow, because the expanding gas bubbles will make it back up.... but if you cut a second hole in the balloon, then it won't back up, it'll just pour through the hole and never stretch the balloon.

Our pouch is like a balloon with two openings (in and out) and so unless one stops up BOTH holes, there can be no stretching.

But it can hurt like the dickens!

I was an 8-10 can a day diet coke abuser.   I cut my intake by 3/4ths before surgery, and have had none since 2/17/12.  It was surprisingly a non-issue.   Although I miss the carbonation, I do not think my stomach would tolerate it now.  Maybe in 3-4 months, but even then, I don't think I want to reintroduce that habit.  I haven't had a single headache since surgery and I haven't lost my voice or had an asthma attack.   (All three were really frequent parts of my diet coke life).
