Side Benefit of Low Carb Eating

I had my six month periodontal checkup today, and the periodontist was thrilled with how well my teeth and gums are doing. My pockets are greatly minimized in comparison to my last visit, and there's very little sign of inflammation at the moment. I could tell things were going well when the hygienist only had to do a little hand scaling, and didn't have to use the ultrasonic cleaner at all. When the periodontist asked why things looked so much better, I told him I've cut way back on the carbs and thanks to my surgery I was eating much less these days. He wanted to know all about the surgery and my progress to date, and was stunned at how much weight I'd lost so far. He took me by the hand on the way out and brought me around to all the staff, telling them what great shape my mouth was in and how much weight I'd lost, LOL! (I didn't mind too much as he's a total sweetheart and looks like a slightly chunky Robert Redford in his prime.)

Sorry, I am new to this so can you tell me what eating carbs does to your teeth and gums?  I know about sugar and cavities from when I was a kid but that's it.

Some simple carbs (chips/crackers etc) covert to sugars that bacteria love to use for their fuel. Bad for teeth and gums in general.

Yep, exactly this. Without the white carbs there's less for the bacteria to live on, and therefore there's less tartar buildup and less to get under the gumline and cause problems for those of us with periodontal disease.
