SLEEP STUDY!!! Is it really necessary?

Most of the things we need to do for health aren't fun, but if we want to be healthy, we're better off doing them. Sleep apnea is a very serious condition.

I'll trade some goop in my hair and a sleep study if anyone wants to take my next colonoscopy for me.

I would, but I have a pap smear scheduled next month.  Next time maybe?

Thank you for your positive response. My anxiety about this test is very real and the negative comments made by some is just unnecessary and uncalled for. I also appreciate the comic relief! Thanks

You know I suffer from acute anxiety disorder, but I still did it. What are you going to be like the day of your surgery. Have you thought about seeking counselling about your anxiety over a little sleep study. They can decline you surgery as well if they feel you are not mentally prepared for surgery either. Just so you know,

This is a very good point.   The sleep study carries no risks, unlike surgery.

Have you been diagnosed with any type of anxiety disorder or take any medications for it?  You might want to consult with your doctor about your fears to be evaluated for any underlying mental issues.  Therapy might not be a bad idea either since you're going in for a revision.

If there is an unknown abnormality that causes you to substain brain damage, lung damage, other harm or death as a result of being under anesthesia, then they are afraid you or your survivors will file a malpractice lawsuit.

They are only doing the sleep study to protect themselves legally.  Most surgeons are very afraid of lawsuits and do unnecessary testing to protect themselves.  Even if you signed a document absolving the hospital, surgeon and anesthesiologist from any blame, a clever lawyer would pursue a malpractice case and blame them for not testing you in advance.

That makes a lot of sense.

I've had two. Neither was a big deal. Not the best I've ever slept, but sleep apnea can kill you and you can have it and not snore. Did you know that people with sleep apnea sometimes have problems with anesthesia?

The sticky goop washes out with shampoo. I've had other far more irksome tests.

You seem disproportionately upset about this particular test.

Is there something about this particular test that is bothering you?

The anesthesiologist also uses this info to help determine what to use when putting you under and whether you will be difficult to wake up after surgery. So to me it's worth any discomfort I may have about it. I would also suggest you ask your doc to give you something to help you sleep, I had a diffficult time relaxing enough to fall asleep. I hope all goes well for you.
