I will be having RNY on 21 November. I would like to fly from the west coast to New York on Christmas day, and visit with someone special for 3 days. That will be 5 weeks post op. Its very important. Would you buy the plane ticket if you were me?

Absolutely!  I travel for a living so had to be on a plane three weeks after surgery. No issues with the actual travel itself but had to learn how to travel and eat. How to find the right food, eat out, etc. I'm 11 months since surgery now and have flown 85k miles since surgery. No problems and doing very well. If you follow the stages of eating rules with no exception and plan to not deviate when you travel should be fine.

That's kind of what I thought. The doc says that you don't get full energy until about 5 weeks, but I travel a lot and expected it should be ok. Thanks for the reply.

I should have mentioned the energy levels. Your DR is right on, while is was OK to travel, i was weak and tired and did not have anywhere near normal energy for at least 6 weeks.

Barring any complications, I think you should be just fine.  Your biggest challenge will probably be eating -- you'll still be on a fairly restrictive diet so make sure you pack what you need for a whole day of travel.  Enjoy your holiday!

Absolutely!  I felt absolutely fine at 5 weeks.   Enjoy the visit and I'm sure that special someone will be glad you did!

I did a week in NYC at my 5 week post-op mark.  I took provisions with me, and planned very carefully what I was eating, and took a little scale to measure things, but it was fine.  I walked more than I even have and had no problems :D

Have a great time..I went to Florida in August and bought little packets of protein powder mixes to have for my breakfast.  My room had a fridge so I walked over to the Publix's store and bought me a carton of unsweetened almond milk.  Had enough for all my breakfasts.. Eating was very cheap.  A sandwich lasted me 3meals, and I ate twice at the same Mexican place and just got a bowl of Refried beans with cheese..gave me more spending money on souvenirs!! Lol.

Have fun!!

I had a family emergency at 2 weeks post op and have been on the road since dealing with family issues. I packed yogurt and protein drinks, then filled in with local foods. I made sure to get my protein and fluids in every day and kept plowing through. IT worked out fine and I never looked back, but keep on pressing forward. You can definitely do this, just stay focused on your goals no matter where you are.
