Non- sugar-coated Cereal

 Good morning,

My hospital booklet says that at the pureed stage we can have Non-sugar-coated cereal soaked in milk.

Is this ok to have?  I know we'll lose no matter what the first six months,  but if I continue to eat this,  will it slow my weight loss?

Right now I'm only eating 1-2 ounces of food at a time.

Thanks,

Jen

I wouldn't have touched cereal with a ten foot pole. Everything you eat at this stage should be mostly protein. If you start going down that carb road, you'll regret it.

Thanks Grimmer! Great to know that's why I posted this.  Don't want to ruin my chances.

i dont know why your instructions would suggest cereal and milk.  it makes NO sense - although i was told i could eat mashed potatoes, but that was only until i could tolerate soft proteins like poached fish.  i ate mashed pot twice and then i was ok with soft proteins.  your body has stores of fat which can make energy (carb and fat) - your body does not store protein.  that is why you eat protein first.

If you are wanting cereal that bad, I would suggest a hot cereal and add some unflavored Protein powder to it. Like grim said protein is the best thing to grab when we eat and its hard learning what to get to get our protein. We get so dependent on the shakes for our protein we forget that we need to eventually eat again lol.

1-2 oz is great. Remember our pouches are 3oz so just hang in there and stay away from the drinking during eating.

you should really hop on our daily RNY thread of what we are eating. I learned so much from that! My plan said potatoes and the people on here set me straight really quick.

There is an older thread I started a while back asking the vets how to be successful. It is a great thread and I still look back at it.

Step away from the cereal aisle!! There's nothing there you need.

In my opinion and this really is just MY OPINION... the surgeons that do our surgery are great, they really know their stuff.  The nutritionists and dietitians are pretty useless. Sorry they are really nice people, but they have NO CLUE what its like to eat post op. I remember going into my 3 mos and 6 months post op appts, I see the same dietitian each time and every time I see her she gives me **** for not eating carbs.  She brings out a plate and says half your plate is protein, a 1/4 carbs like rice or potatoes etc and 1/4 veggies and fruit for a dessert or snack.  We got into an argument every single time cuz I fought back and said no.  Just saw her this past November for my 2 year appt, she was blown away by my success and my ability to keep the weight off.  I basically said to her no thanks to you and your "eat carbs" she just stared at me.  We agreed to disagree.  My centre considered oatmeal and cream of wheat as soft foods, that just seemed so damn counterproductive to me and I stuck with my finely chopped egg or tuna salad or in the beginning protein shakes.

Please take the "guidelines" they give as from our Centres as just that, guidelines.  I got way more info/advice here on the RNY OH board than I ever did from my centre. There are a lot of high protein foods you can find in the pureed stage that are good, yogurt, mashed egg salad, mashed tuna salad, mashed chili, soup with added protein powder are just a few ideas.

Good luck Jen!

some drs DO get it - some say they dont care if we never eat another carb.

Your NUIT is just giving conventional advice (and only 5% are successful keeping wt off with conventional advice) and has not really read or understood the post-WLS studies.  if you add your NUIT's dessert recommendations to the 1/4 plate of carbs, she would have you eating lots of carbs.  her head is in the sand, or up her @$$
