What's the Deal with Butter Coffee?

So a Google bunny trail for me today...

I don't really drink coffee, but I'm addicted to my PG Tips tea. I happened upon this thing about butter coffee and remembered that I think I see Keith often does this. So I tried to learn what, if any, the benefits of doing so are. Couldn't find much.

Then, for kicks, I searched and learned that in Tibet, they do this butter TEA that looks different, but amazing. Well, I'm all about ethnic cuisine and experimentation, so I'm taking the recipe home to give it a whirl..perhaps.

But my question is....butter? Really? I mean..'s a lot of fat. What's the benefit?

Anyone have any ideas?

Check out bulletproofexec.com this is the guy that basically got the ball rolling on this new trend. He does a really good job explaining it. :)

1)  Fat really isn't as big a problem as people claim it is.

2)  Years ago people used cream or half and half (ie fat)

3)  From my LIMITED knowledge of fat in general it helps keep hunger at bay for hours.  Especially the good for you fats.

The other day I heard people talking about putting coconut oil in their coffee. Have you ever tried that? Think I'm going to have to go experimenting too.

It's very good, read my post a little lower in this thread, it has more details about it.

I don't know about butter but I always use whipping cream - not half and half - in my coffee. I never count fat - just carbs and sugar.

My RD I work with for my personal and Cafe Frisco efforts advises the use of butter as a condiment vs. a main ingredient (Paula Dean)......

As  a flavor component......and count the calories......

She also recommends Grass feed cow butter..... The one I've been using is the Kerrygold brand.

I have been doing more and more of the grass fed thing but I find that the beef has a significanly different flavor than traditional beef and it is going to take some getting used to.

Though, like you said, butter has a lot of fat, I figure that it is better for me in the long run than artificial sweeteners, creamers with a bunch of words in it that I can't pronounce, or even straight sugar that adds more carbs than I want to think about.
