I'm almost 3 weeks post- op, and somewhere around 9 days out, I forgot to take my omeprazol. I didn't notice any difference. I didn't take it the next day, and everything was status quo.  Do I HAVE to take a PPI ? Pros vs cons ? Side note: I never had stomach issues before surgery. I don't know what heartburn feels like. Thank you for any input you provide.

I don't think you HAVE to take one...I thought it was a case by case basis.  I could be wrong though...it happens a lot lol

My surgeon has his patients take a PPI for at least a few months after surgery not just for heartburn, but to protect the healing stomach. I was told that the long staple line needs to be protected from acid while it's healing to avoid ulcers. So I would probably keep taking it unless you hear differently from your doc.

My surgeon actually recommended that I come off of mine (I tried to, but ended up needing it again). I think it's a rare win to be able to go without. Here's hoping that you can!

Does anyone know if you can buy PPI in Mexico before you leave?  Do you need an RX?

Not sure about Mexico, but Prilosec OTC (omeprazole) is available without a prescription in the US.

You can purchase without a prescription. Ask the driver to take you to a pharmacy on the way to the hotel once you've been discharged. If you're staying at Hotel Pueblo Amigo, you can walk to Ley store, there is a pharmacy in there.

Our center wants us on omeprazol twice a day for the first year.  Based on research I read here I took myself off one a day at ~8 months and went thru heck for 3/4 weeks than everything was great.  I did the same at 1 year and went thru heck again for 3/4 weeks and now am doing great.  I had acid reflux with my band but not before I got it or after I had it taken out.  I understand the reason for doing it at first as we don't "feel" with our newly cut up stomach.  Some just feel the acid as hunger.  They also don't want us to develop ulcers in the staple line by our stomach making too much acid for the new smaller stomach..

I see people post here that they never had to take them.  Than I see people complaining here and on the revision board that they developed ulcers.  Some of what we see as unnecessary are based on the information that CEO's get and share based on those that went before us.  (and some are unnecessary and held over from RNY)

If your surgeon recommended it, I would take it, since you're fresh from surgery.  At this stage our sleeves are still healing,  the nerves have been severed and you might not feel everything that's going on in there.

My surgeon prescribed it for only the first three months.  If I have problems when I stop taking it (and I've never had reflux,  heartburn or indigestion in my life), I am to call their office and they'll refill the prescription.

I take lansoprazole and it should be taken on an empty stomach.   I take it as soon as my alarm clock wakes me up in the morning.

Good luck!

Thank you to everyone that offered advice! I'll go back on them for a while. This has hidden reasons for taking them, similar to hidden reasons for pre-op diet, and I wouldn't have known unless I asked! Thanks again!!
