Hey everyone!! I just went for my 5th out of 6 diet & exercise visits to my pcp. Ahh!! One more! It's so close I can feel it! Anywho. I was just wondering if there was anything that completely shocked you during your journey. Good or bad, I want to know! I have been lurking here for a while, occasionally asking a question, but was there ever something that you really weren't expecting?

Thanks!

I wasn't expecting the emotions and pain to be so bad the first 4 weeks

i also wasn't expecting to feel so many positive changes in only 2 months. Shocked by how quickly clothes get too big.

I wasn't expecting my life to change so much so fast!  I want to do ALL THE THINGS these days and it's so different from how I was a mere 3 months ago. I love it!

My disclaimer is that I am only five days post surgery, but in my experience, recovery has been so much less of an issue than I anticipated.  I know everyone has different situations, but I anticipated being in more pain and being more nauseated than I actually am.

probably the biggest surprise is how much my taste buds have changed.  I even read about it, and thought that would never happen to me.  The reason I became 150 pounds overweight, was because I loved sugar.  Now, anything too sweet makes my stomach turn. I don't have any cravings, except for maybe a small chicken breast with vegetables but I'm too soon to even think about that.

I tend to psych myself out, and my brain went to the worst-case scenario, which has not happened yet. I wish you nothing but the best.

Really... Hmm thanks for sharing. I too have read people say that their taste buds change. I was thinking, oh that probably won't happen to me, but I guess I'll have to have a more open mind. I wonder if your taste buds ever go back? Anyone know?

Same EXACT thing as Ginger-  wasn't expecting the emotional roller coaster for the first month post op.  Boy am I glad that's over!  I knew it would be difficult with all the adjustments but food was my hobby, and to lose my favorite hobby... well, that sucked.

Omg! Me either! I'm hoping that my surgeon is one of those that will schedule your surgery without the approval for like 2-3 weeks after your final visit while your waiting for approval. Then of course if something happens and you don't get approved they just reschedule.

okay, because there is no such thing as TMI on a message board devoted to surgery on the digestive tract . . .

my tailbone.

I've been obese my entire adult (and child and adolescent) life and things like my collarbone and hip bones were things I knew in theory existed but had never actually seen or felt. I was delighted to make acquaintance with them, but I was expecting them. But one evening I was, ah, cleaning up immediately after using the toilet and found a strange hard, bumpy lump between my butt cheeks. For several seconds I had no idea what it was and the only possibilities I could think of were: 1. a bizarre deformity that will get me written up in medical journals 2. giant rock-hard tumor indicating some weird form of butt cancer; 3. some form of partial constipation that has my body storing up and calcifying poop instead of letting go of all of it.

Seriously . . . I had no idea what it was and was freaking out. But after a few seconds I figured it out. It still feels kind of strange to me when I run across it though!
