Head hunger is something we all face and it can be powerful enough to actually convince you that you really ARE hungry!

How do you deal with head hunger?  What do you have in place to help yourself work through those trying head hunger times?

By recognizing what real hunger feels like vs. head hunger and understanding what actual satiety is and how to extend satiety.

Satiety is the other side of hunger.

For most of us, pre-op satiety was "gorged" full. Post op VSG satiety is something much different that needs to be learned for most.

Real hunger or head hunger is not an emergency.

I try to keep busy and distracted. I use a lot of self talk too. I try to remind myself that I am a healthy person who makes healthy choices. Sometimes this works. Sometimes there is cheese. :P

The way I try to overcome this is the idea that if I am really hungry anything would be good, but with head hunger I only want certain things, usually things not so good.

Every minute you engage in mindless self abuse is a minute you can't spend mindlessly eating.

Molesting yourself is harmless fun, and burns extra calories, rather than consuming them.

Yeah, the fat ******* that lives inside me has developed a taste for peanut M&Ms.  I am having to kick his ass for that.

I eat by the clock and plan every meal ahead of time.  If I feel hunger of any kind ( real or head), I ignore it.  I eat a very small meal every three or four hours.  Anyone can wait a few hours before they eat again.  Hunger is not an emergency and does not require immediate attention.

Sometimes thirst feel like hunger - drink water. then if you are still hungry - what are you hungry for?

Pick food item you not really that much like.  Then when you think "I am hungry" - think if that food would be OK to eat - if not - it is head hunger... if you really hungry - a food - any food is OK..

Sometimes i feel hungry - I open the fridge full of food and nothing looks OK. I know I am not really hungry..  so I close the fridge and .. drink some warm tea..  until my body is ready for "real food" i.e. plain chicken.. or protein shake..

And there are the times that I know I am hungry but it is not time to eat.   so I drink water, tea, and wait to eat.. Food taste much better then..

This is the biggest challenge for us to reach goal and stay there.  When I talk to members that are just starting their research I tell them "you have to get it right between the ears before re-arranging you're plumbing".   That being said YOU CAN DO IT!

Here is a link to some articles from OH that have great suggestions and helpful hints.
