Acid Reflux

i am 6 months post op next week. I've been doing great so far. I've lost almost 80 lbs. I just hit one-derland.

Except... In the past 2 weeks I've had 3 major acid reflux attacks. I'm not sure why. No problems until now, but all of a sudden...bam. And they are debilitating too. I can't do anything other than curl in a ball when it hits.

I've gone over my food choices on all of these days and nothing seem out of the ordinary- meat, cheese, nuts.

Do you think there is something wrong?

Anyone got any ideas or advice?

thanks!

Acid reflux is a very common result of VSG surgery.  It's the reason that VSG is sometimes not recommended for someone with severe GERD, or people with Barrett's esophagus (pre-cancerous damage from acid).  I'm always so surprised when someone posts about this, I feel like their surgeon should have started them on a PPI.

Research the difference between PPIs and H2 Inhibitors and get on a *PPI* and stay on it.  Acid reflux is no fun, and if you let it go too long it can eventually be dangerous to your esophagus.

They told me it could be a side effect. The part I am trying to understand is why now?  Why 6 months later?

OH, I see!  LOL.  Sorry, no insight there.  I doubt if you're doing anything wrong.  Just hits some people at different points than others, but you might want to check with your surgeon's office to see what their experience has been (other patients reporting).

reflux usually doesn't cause one to curl up in a ball with. Pain. That sounds more like an ulcer or potentially a blockage. I would get in.  Touch with my surgeon ASAP.

Any chance it could be your gallbladder? My GB attack**** me in the sternum, sort of between the lower part of my breasts, right in the middle. Felt like a charley horse in my chest. Something to keep in mind and its quite common after vsg.

I didn'thave issues post-op until fairly recently. Ended up getting scoped and they found scarring due to acid. It is weird, as I never experience heartburn- but clearly I have acid issues. They have me on 40 mg omnoprozole (spelling is wrong) which is sold over the counter as Prilosec. I would for sure try some, and also a call to your doctor. Turns out that the 40 mg is covered by insurance, but not the 20 mg (amount sold OTC) and it is much cheaper as a result.

I take Protonix or the generic Pantoprazole which is a proton pump inhibitor or PPI. I have not had any issues with acid refulx. I would talk to your surgeon or family doc.

Thanks for the assistance everyone.  I went to my primary care doctor and he gave me protonix.  He also scheduled me for the ultrasound of the gallbladder.  Hopefully we will figure this out.
