Two nights.  The first night was in a special ICU unit, not because I had any complications, but because it's where they put the bariatric surgery patients for observation.  It was wonderful.  The second night I was in a regular room and the noise on the floor was deafening.  I couldn't wait to get discharged.

Most doctors don't use stitches or staples that need to be removed. VSG done laparoscopically would not require any exterior staples to be removed. Most doctors use the butterfly sutures, no stitches (but I imagine anyone who did, they were probably dissolvable). My butterfly sutures fell off about 10-14 days out from normal washing of the area.

Do you know that your doctor specifically uses staples or stitches that need to be removed?

RNY on 05/04/15

I had RNY, and my husband had VSG. Our surgeon said about 2/3 of his RNY pts stay 2 nights with 1/3 only staying 1, and that 2/3 of his VSG pts stay 1 night with 1/3 needing to stay 2. We both had surgery on a Monday morning and were home by Tuesday afternoon.

My surgery was at 7am and I left the hospital that night at 10pm. I've had no complications at all.

I checked in at 9am, and was released around 4pm the following day. Luckily I live bout 15 minutes from the hospital so the ride home was easy. My 2-week followup is in three days!

I stayed in the hospital from Monday to Wednesday and went home Wednesday night.  I never had staples or stitches removed; even at my surgical weight (400) I had only dissolvable stitches.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
