Ok, so my surgery is in 3 days for a rny. I have done massive research for a long time now on all the types i went with rny because i wanted to lose the most weight the fastest and now i want to change to the sleeve at last minute. Everything just points me to the sleeve being a better option, im going to call tomorrow to see what they say but has anyone done this or have any comments or suggestions on this decision?

Talk to your surgeon about it - you need to do what is right for you.

Don't base your decision on losing the most weight the fastest, base it on the surgeries and what they mean for the REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!  I'm not going to detail the differences - you should know them by this point.  Do whichever works best for you long term.  If you are motivated and follow the rules, the weight will come off - it's only a tool and there are plenty of people out there who do not lose the weight or put it back on.  It's all up to you ultimately.  Your head is 90% of the game.

Call your surgeon first thing this morning and discuss it.  Does your insurance cover the sleeve?  You may have to get approval from them before your surgeon can proceed.

Just know that changing your mind, which is fine to do, may postpone your surgery.

Good luck with your decision.  I had the sleeve three years ago, and I am so happy with it.  But I also know many people who had the RNY and are equally happy.

I just wanted to say that I lost 225 pounds in 18 months with my sleeve.  I've been maintaining - with effort - at a normal BMI range for over 1.5 years.  The sleeve did the job for me.

I think the most important consideration is the long term -  I  know people who have gained a lot of their weight again after surgery with both the sleeve and RNY.  So its important to think long-term in this decision.

best of luck,

Carol

Different advantages depending on which surgery-

If you are diabetic, Rny is a little better (but vsg will put many of us in remission)

No rerouting or malabsorption with vsg, less complications

In my surgeon's practice last time we chatted about it, the weight loss overall is very comparable between the two. Same goes for regain.

Both surgeries are quite good. Folks on this board obviously went with the sleeve so you will find some bias. Chat with your doc.

I'm not an expert on insurance stuff, but if memory serves, paperwork is submitted to insurance for a specific procedure-- in your case, RNY. For insurance to pay for a sleeve, your paperwork may need to be re-submitted and evaluated again with the procedure code for VSG.

If that's what you want, then go for it-- but be aware that it may be another month before surgery. Several weeks for insurance to process things, several more weeks to re-schedule you in the OR. What's important is that you have the right procedure for YOU.

Regardless of your decision, you need to get in touch with your surgeon ASAP, especially if you'll be under the knife later this week. You need to get his/her opinion and let him/her know that you may be cancelling surgery if you plan to switch.
