So hard :(

alright so here's my pre op diet: 3-4 protein shakes a day + unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello, plain grits, plain oatmeal, broth, non starchy steamed or raw veggies (I hate veggies tho). I don't like half of that stuff so I'm reeeeally struggling. On top of that, I'm lactose intolerant so I need lactose free (or close to it) protein shakes... I've come to find they don't fill me up. At least the ones I'm trying (ISO 100) headaches are almost intolerable.... will anything actually happen if I have a plain grilled no skin no bone chicken breast with a little salt and pepper?! Once a day for this pre op diet? Tried to call the pre surgical office but they're closed. IM STARVING and I think I need SOMETHING to keep me sane.

Have you contacted your docs office or your nutritionist about this?

The pre-op diet is hard, and almost all of us were universally hungry.  You will be hungry on it, and I don't think we get well prepared for this.  Unfortunately, there is no way around it. :( The hunger is your body begging for carbohydrate as the glycogen (stored glucose) is depleted.  This is what shrinks the liver.

Can you have heavy cream?  I'm not sure if that has a lot of lactose in it.  Add something high fat to the shakes; that will help with satiety more than the protein at this point, until ketosis kicks in.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Not sure about heavy cream Donna, but I will ask as soon as I can get ahold of my pre surgical office! Not sure if I can have something "high fat" though. Praying I get through this! Thanks for the advice!

The first 3-4 days of the pre-op diet just suck.  There's no easy way around it.  It gets better.  Keep your eyes on the prize.  Keep as busy as possible to distract yourself.

I agree 100% with Gwen. The pre-op diet just sucks. It's tough from almost everyone. But, months and years from now when you're looking back on it you will barely remember it and hopefully you will be a healthier version of what you are today. Very worth it.

You actually have it pretty good! My pre op diet (which I didn't have to do because I lost enough weight) was 14 days of liquids, mostly clear liquids, getting to have oatmeal and such is a huge treat!  Follow thru because they can close you right back up if you have lost enough fat off of your liver.

I wasn't allowed any of that, either - just protein shakes and clear liquids.

It sucks, but I promise if you tough it out, it gets easier.  My pre-op diet was different, but I've been on diets similar to your's before and it sucked most at day 3 to 4.  After that, it seemed that my body pretty much resigned itself to its fate and the crazy hunger and cravings went away.

Wish you the best!
