2 years, 6 months out!

Jul 08, 2014

Amazingly, I am looking back at my surgery journey from the viewpoint of a graduate!  It's been 2 and a half years and my my boyfriend is looking into the same surgery.   We are looking at Hope Bariatrics in Sewickley, PA.  Could anyone recommend one of the three physicians there?

Sunday- Day 2 Food Journal

Apr 10, 2011

Paying attention to what I eat is making a big difference.  Today I consumed around 1400 calories, well under the 1900 allotted calories for each day- which is good because I really need to make pennance for yesterday!

Schnikes!

Apr 09, 2011

I've never tracked calories before but I took a friends advice and downloaded the livestrong app and created a login.  What an eye-opener!

Today I talked with my therapist, Val, about my thoughts on WLS and my hopes for the upcoming months.  We also discussed my fears and especially my fear that I don't have the discipline.  She said to start with the idea that I am choosing to develop discipline and that we'd start by just recording what I eat every day and the mood I have at the time that I eat.   I would then take this to her each week and discuss how, why, when and what I am eating every day.  Oh Lord...I had no idea I was consuming this much each day.  My thoughts before I recorded todays intake on livestrong were "Gee I only ate half a chicken sandwhich for lunch and half my fries...and I only ate one piece of pepperoni pizza for dinner.  I gasped when I saw the caloric and fat intake.  Feel free to leave comments, suggestions, observations...

3 Things

Apr 08, 2011

Well, I am now waiting for 3 things to happen:
1. The call from the surgeon (I'm worried that she may say no to lap-band because of my high BMI.)
2. The information session next Friday, April15th
3.  My first weigh in with my general practitioner Thursday, April 28th

I had a serious talk with my best friend, Heather, in which she gave me the low-down on what would happen if I did not follow post operative eating guidelines.  It wasn't pretty.  She said that if I were to ever eat more than I should that I would stretch out the portion of my stomach above the band and could die from that.  Scary.  I feel confidant that I can do this and that the band will be a helpful tool but I am wondering- how is it that so many people go from having very little self-discipline to a great deal of discipline after the lap-band has been placed?  It must be able to be done or so many people wouldn't be successful.  If anyone reading this prays, please pray for me that I will develop the self discipline to live a new life with the help of this tool- and that the surgeon will approve to do the surgery!

What could a brief conversation lead to?

Apr 06, 2011

Yesterday was my 34th birthday.  I was not looking forward to a small family party and was in a generally mopey mood when my best friend texted me to tell me she couldn't have dinner but she wanted me to meet her in a half hour.  She had a smile for me, a big hug and a silly card with a monkey on it that made me laugh.   I was so grateful for the company and the encouragement (she reminded me that pity parties stink).  I was still in a mood but  I felt slightly better as I listened jealously  to the story of a 5K race she had recently walked.  During her retelling she mentioned a girl she had just met who struggled with a food addiction- who had also had lap-band surgery and lost most of the weight this past year.
The conversation was brief- but something was lit inside of me and that's all I could think about all evening.  By 6PM this evening I had joing OH, researched the different surgeries, narrowed down surgeons to one, set up an appoinment for the general practitioner, called my insurance to verify that the surgery can be covered, faxed my information to the surgeon, and set up a day next week to attend an informative seminar.
I'm wondering, what could this brief conversation lead to?
