Boil a chicken in seasoned water until it's completely done. You may need to run it through a strainer to get the 'bits' out that fall of the chicken. You can also buy clear broth near the soup, but honestly the other way tastes better (and you can freeze the chicken and make chicken salad when you get to that point).

Seasoning is KEY in making good chicken broth (you can also throw in an onion and some carrots for more flavor)

That sounds yummy. Now is this something I can have during the pre-op stage?

Check with your NUT, but mine was fine with it as long as it was strained to avoid anything solid... I ate it post op during my liquid stage as well...

This is my family's recipe for Jewish Penicillin. It can be a long process, but well worth the time and effort!

Ingredients: 1 whole chicken or chicken quarters , 2-3 sliced carrots, 2-3 sliced stalks of celery, 1 chopped onion, fresh dill (do not omit or sustitute dry), 1-2 tablespoons whole peppercorns, 1-2 crushed garlic cloves, chicken base (I like Minor's Chicken Base) or bouillon.

Directions:

In a large pot, using canola oil spray, sauté the carrots, celery & onions.

Add the chicken, either whole or cut up to the pot and fill with water. Bring the water to a boil & then turn it down to simmer.

Tie the dill with cotton twine and add it to the pot.

Wrap the garlic and peppercorns in a small bit of cheesecloth (or a small bit of papertowel), tie it closed and add it to the pot.

Add the chicken base (see the directions-how much to add is dependant on how much water you use).

Simmer for 3 hours.

Let it cool and pour the broth, through a colander, into container(s). Put the clear broth and the veggies/chicken into the refrigerator overnight. This time allows the fat to rise to the top so it can be skimmed off. Don't worry if the broth is gelatin-like. THIS IS A GOOD THING! It means that the bones have released their healthy colagen.

You can discard the dill, peppercorns & garlic. Remove the chicken (discard the skin) & shred for salad or add it back to some of the broth along with the veggies. I also keep some clear broth in the freezer for cooking.

ENJOY!

You can also look up bone broth on youtube, it's great. I was preop at thanksgiving, so I made some from turkey bones(I added a little poultry seasoning to the other ingredients) and froze a bunch of it in small containers. It tasted like Thanksgiving. So much better than store bought and comforting
